Deformation Test

To maintain a good seal, gasket materials must not only be resistance to temperature, pressure and chemical media, but also exhibit dimensional stability. Conventional skived PTFE gasket materials have excellent chemical resistance but lack dimensional stability because of their tendency to cold flow under clamping load and at elevated temperature.

Deformation Test Conditions

500°
1500 psi
One Hour Duration

In the photo above, an Alltra 440 gasket is tested along with a gasket cut from conventional skived PTFE. This deformation test illustrates the difference in the dimensional stability of the two materials and the amount of resulting cold flow. Cold flow causes the gasket to "thin" and in turn, the flanges to loose clamping pressure against the gasket. Any internal piping pressure will exploit this loosening and create a leak .
